Lesson 19

Remember Now thy Creator

Courtesy of Pastor Ken LeBrun

Lesson 18 is a prerequisite to this lesson.

In Revelation 14:6-12 we find three angels bearing solemn messages to the inhabitants of the earth. The first proclaims that the hour of God’s judgment has come. (Remember, the judgment began at the end of the “2300 days” of Daniel 8 and 9.) The second angel announces the fall of modern spiritual Babylon. And the third warns against worshipping the beast and his image and receiving his mark.

Once the messages have been proclaimed to all the world, “the harvest of earth” is reaped (Revelation 14:15). “The harvest is the end of the world.” Matthew 13:39.

The three angels’ messages, therefore, constitute Heaven’s appeal to humanity in these last days of earth’s history. As such, they deserve the full attention of all who would prepare themselves for the final events.

Matthew 24:14 “And this GOSPEL of the kingdom shall be PREACHED in all the world for a witness unto ALL NATIONS; and then shall the end come.”

Revelation 14:6 “And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting GOSPEL to PREACH unto them that dwell on the earth, and to EVERY NATION, and kindred, and tongue, and people.”

1. According to the passage, whom are we not to worship?

Revelation 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

2. In what terms is the One whom we are to worship identified?

Revelation 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

3. Upon what basis is God declared worthy to receive glory and honor and power?

Revelation 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

Throughout the Scriptures, the fact that God created all things is presented as that which sets Him above all false gods, and makes Him alone worthy of our worship (1 Chronicles 16:25, 26; Jeremiah 10:11, 12; Isaiah 45:18).

While modern scientists vainly attempt to disprove creation, the first angel of Revelation 14 proclaims a message designed to draw the attention of the world to “Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”

4. The worshippers of God are identified as keeping what?

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

5. What do the commandments of God say about creation?

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Notice that the angel of Revelation 14:7 uses the wording of the fourth commandment to call the world back to the true worship of God.

6. When the heavens and the earth were finished, and God had ended His work, what did He do on the seventh day?

Genesis 2:1,2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

7. What two things did God do to the seventh day?

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

8. Why did God make the seventh day special?

Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

9. Did the Creator rest because He was weary?

Isaiah 40:28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

10. Then for whose benefit did He make the Sabbath?

Mark 2:27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

11. The Lord rested on the seventh day, blessed it, and did what else to it?

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Hallow: “To make or set apart as holy.” Dictionary.

12. Since he made it holy, we must remember to do what?

Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

13. On whose day was John in the Spirit?

Revelation 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day

14. Which day does the Lord claim as His?

Isaiah 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

Sunday = 1st Day
Monday = 2nd Day
Tuesday = 3rd Day
Wednesday = 4th Day
Thursday = 5th Day
Friday = 6th Day
Sabbath = 7th Day

The Lengths of days, months, seasons, and years are determined by the movements of the earth and moon in relation to the sun. But the seven-day weekly cycle is not a known astronomical unit of any kind. Its existence can be explained only by the fact that God declared and established it when He created the world.

- Crucifixion Friday
"The day before the Sabbath" Mark 15:42

- Jesus Rested in the Tomb
"The Sabbath Day" (Luke 23:56)

- Resurrection Sunday
"The Sabbath was past" (Mark 16:1)

15. Which day is the Sabbath of the Lord?

Exodus 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

16. Jesus referred to Himself as Lord of what?

Mark 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

17. Did Jesus keep His Father’s commandments?

John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

18. Did Jesus observe the seventh-day Sabbath?

Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

19. He that says he abides in Him ought to walk how?

1 John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

20. What has God designated as a sign of the relationship between Him and His people?

Ezekiel 20:20 And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.

21. What is necessary in order to activate a testament?

Hebrews 9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

22. At the time of Jesus’ death, was there still a Sabbath commandment?

Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

23. Once a covenant has been confirmed by the death of the testator, can any alterations be made in it after that time?

Galatians 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.

24. Will God Himself ever change it?

Psalm 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

25. Who will enter in through the gates into the Holy City?

Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

26. Does that include keeping the commandment about the Sabbath?

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

In the Light of God's Word...

I understand that Revelation 14 contains a last-day message for all the world.

I understand that the Sabbath was made for man at the creation of the world.

I understand that the Sabbath of the Lord is the seventh day of the week, Saturday.

I choose to keep holy the day God has made holy.

Next Lesson: God’s Commandment Remains Unchanged

As you saw in this lesson, the 7 day week was established at creation and there is no movement of any astronomical body that it can be derived from. The earth travels around the sun in a single year. The full cycle of the moon gives us a 30 day month and one full rotation of the earth on it's axis gives us a 24 hour day. However, there is one thing that the week has in common with each of these and yet there is no scientific reason for it either. Just as these astronomical cycles never change, neither does the week nor has it ever changed. Although men have tried, they have failed. In the same way, the seventh-day Sabbath was also established at creation and it also has never changed. In Lesson 20, you'll discover that the Bible gives no indication of a change of the Sabbath to another day. What God sets in stone, as in the ten commandments, including the 4th commandment of the Sabbath, it is established forever.
